Leopold Konig took the stage into Caerphilly, but Jonathan Tiernan-Locke's brilliant second-place finish earned him the leader's jersey in the Tour of Britain.

The first serious stage in the hills took a toll as a host of riders, race leader Leigh Howard among them, found life tough.

At the front of the race, Tiernan-Locke and Konig jumped away on the first of two ascents up Caerphilly Mountain. They worked enough of an advantage to ensure the stage was between them heading out for a second climb.

Tiernan-Locke had designs on the overall lead and he put in a huge shift on the climbs, handing Konig a sit in behind.

Konig had the greater strength at the finish and jumped away in the final kilometre to take the stage.

Tiernan-Locke kept his form and hauled himself over the line in second, which was enough to take him into the gold leader's jersey.
