Marianne Vos thrilled the home crowd in Valkenburg with victory in the women's road race at the Road World Championships.

Vos came into the race as the overwhelming favourite and she delivered in style. She powered across to a breakaway group on the Cauberg climb with two laps to go and showed the best legs at the finish.

It was a notable effort at the finish from Vos, as she worked extremely hard to ensure the break stayed away. There were fears that she had done too much at the head of the group, but she attacked again on the final climb up the Cauberg and broke the will of her rivals.

Vos, who won gold in the road race at London 2012, worked such an advantage in the final 500m that she was able to grab a Netherlands flag and celebrate when rolling over the line.

Rachel Neylan of Australia finished 10 seconds behind Vos, with Italy's Elisa Longo Borghini third.
