Two golds for GB as Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome opens

Jess Varnish and Becky James picked up Great Britain's first gold medal of the Track World Cup in Glasgow on Friday, at the newly-opened Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome in Glasgow.

The women's pursuit trio of Laura Trott, Dani King and Elinor Barker then followed up with a second success - while the new-look men's sprint three had to settle for silver in their final.

On the first day of international competition at the brand new venue, Varnish and James clinched the women's team sprint title with some ease - beating Spain's duo of Tania Calvo and Helena Casas by over half a second having reached the final as fastest qualifiers.

It may have provided a measure of relief for Varnish, after her dreams of Olympic gold were dashed when a mix-up in changeover with team-mate Victoria Pendleton saw the duo disqualified.

Next on track at the Velodrome, Trott, King and Barker - replacing Joanna Rowsell from the team that won gold at London 2012 - proved too good for the competition, eventually beating Australia in the head-to-head final despite qualifying second fastest.

The men's sprint reached the final in similar fashion but were unable to deny the impressive Germany. Ed Clancy - making his first appearance at the distance after stepping down from the pursuit - performed well, but was unable to help Jason Kenny and Philip Hindes to victory as the absence from the team of the man whose name is on the stadium, Sir Chris Hoy, was felt.

Elsewhere, the men's 4,000m event was won by Denmark - after the somewhat inexperienced British team of Andrew Tennant, Sam Harrison, Owain Doull and Joe Kelly crashed in qualification.
