Trott ensures golden finish in Glasgow

As is quickly becoming her trademark, Olympic champion Laura Trott left it late to clinch a dramatic victory in the omnium at the Track World Cup in Glasgow.

Trott came into the final part of the multi-discipline event, the 500 metres time trial, needing to beat Australia's Ashlee Ankudinoff by two places to claim the title.

Staring down her opponent in the final run of the event she managed to achieve the task set her - crossing the line fastest overall as Ankudinoff came in fourth, enabling the 20-year-old to clinch matters on countback.

Her performance was greeted by rapturous applause from fans at the new Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome, after they had earlier missed out on another great chance to witness a domestic victory as Jason Kenny was forced to withdraw from the individual sprint due to a crash he sustained in the keirin on Saturday.

Speaking on Sunday as he visited the venue that carries his name, Sir Chris Hoy revealed his belief that Trott can one day overhaul his litany of Olympic medals.

"She's got youth on her side, she's got plenty of time ahead of her and she's got ability, clearly," Hoy said. "What might stand in her way is the programme selection, you just don't know what the UCI are going to do to her events.

"Whatever events there are for an endurance athlete like Laura, she has the potential to dominate and she can go on for three more Olympic Games and could easily go on to become Britain's most decorated Olympian."

Elsewhere on Sunday, Becky James completed an encouraging meeting with a fifth place finish in the final of the women's keirin. Jess Varnish came ninth overall in the same event, after securing third in the 7-12th final.
