Wiggins: Accident was a blessing in disguise

Bradley Wiggins has described his recent accident as a "blessing in disguise" and is delighted to get back to normality following a hectic season.

Wiggins became a national treasure in July when he became the first British winner of the Tour de France before blazing to Olympic time trial gold just three weeks later.

Having to attend a variety of events as a result of his success means Wiggins has not been able to train full-time, but after recovering from a nasty accident which left him hospitalised, the Brit is delighted to be back on his bike.

"I was very lucky, it could have been a long, long lay-off but fortunately it was just ten days and I was just back on the bike," Wiggins told Sky Sports News.

"Looking back now, coming off as bad as I did, it was a blessing in disguise because things were getting a bit out of control. It's nice to get back to what I do best, which is riding my bike.

"It's what I enjoy, it's all the other stuff that I didn't enjoy; the celebrity lifestyle. It has been nice to do what got me there in the first place the last couple of weeks."

Team Sky announced on Wednesday that Wiggins would focus on the Giro d'Italia, while Chris Froome would be team leader at the 2013 Tour de France.
