La Vuelta 2013 route unveiled

Organisers of the Vuelta a Espana have unveiled the route for the 2013 edition of the race, with the course expected to favour the climbers with a number of mountain stages.

After last year's race was held exclusively in the north of the Iberian peninsula, the 68th edition will cover the length of the country as riders will have to contend with extreme heat of southern Andalucia in August.

Starting with a team time trial on the northwestern coast of Galicia on August 24, riders will head south before returning to the north for a series of gruelling mountain stages heading into Andorra and France before the traditional finish in the capital Madrid on September 15.

Spaniard Alejandro Valverde, runner-up behind compatriot Alberto Contador in the 2012 Vuelta said: "We all enjoyed the Vuelta last year and things went well for me. I didn't arrive in good shape but ended up on the podium. This year, the course looks similar so I will try to do well."
