Froome wins stage to take Dauphine lead

Chris Froome made a statement of intent by powering to victory in Stage Five of the Criterium Du Dauphine to take the overall lead in the race.

The Team Sky rider has been in superb form this season as he builds up to the Tour de France. The Dauphine is the final tune-up for the Tour and Froome looks to be peaking at the right time.

Froome rode himself into contention during Wednesday's timetrial and backed up the effort with a storming victory.

Froome saw Alberto Contador go away on the final climb up the Montee de Valmorel but he did not panic and bridged the gap.

The Sky rider caught Contador before the pair overhauled long-time stage leader Matthew Busche. And putting down a clear marker ahead of the bigger battles in the Tour de France, Froome raced away from Contador to claim a four-second win in the stage.

Richie Porte came home in ninth on the stage which was enough to move him second on general classification behind his Sky team-mate Froome, albeit 52 seconds adrift.
