American cyclist Chris Horner has been caught up in a drugs controversy just hours after victory in the Vuelta a Espana on Sunday.

Spanish testers arrived at the hotel of Horner's team RadioShack-Leopard on Monday morning, but the 41-year-old had spent the night in a different hotel celebrating with his wife.

When testers went to a second hotel, Horner was again nowhere to be seen, but his team have angrily defended their rider and questioned the competence of the testers.

A team spokesman told cyclingnews.com: "There is no problem. They went to the team hotel but he is in another hotel. He had mentioned this in his Adams [Anti-Doping And Management System]. They should do their administration more correctly than they did. They need to check their whereabouts, too."

RadioShack-Leopard press officer Tim Vanderjeugd also tweeted: "The second hotel they went to was a randomly picked Ibis where they thought he could be."
