Katie Colclough enjoyed a winning start to the Road World Championships as the Brit took gold in the team time trial with her team Specialized-Lululemon in Tuscany.

Colclough helped the team defend their title after finishing in a time of 51 minutes 10.69 seconds, one minute and 11 seconds ahead of second-placed Rabo Women.

"I'm unbelievably happy," Conclough told BBC Sport. "It was hard from the start, but we've done it lots of times and I'm well drilled.

"It's the best feeling. I've never won a world title before so I'm really, really pleased. And to do it with these girls, who I've ridden with for the last three years, they're like my best friends so it's really good.

"It's so nerve-wracking before with all the waiting, but once you're in it, you're in the zone and it's pretty straight forward - just nice, flat and straight for the first 30 kilometres.

"I don't think we've [the team] lost a time trial in the last three years. Obviously I didn't ride in the team last year, but coming in there's still a lot of pressure so it's very nerve-wracking."

Tour de France winner Chris Froome and fellow Brit Geraint Thomas finished third to take bronze for Team Sky in the men's race. They crossed the line 22.55 seconds behind winners Omega-Pharma QuickStep, who won gold in one hour four minutes 16.81 seconds.
