Trott makes it a double with omnium triumph

Laura Trott made it two gold medals at the Track Cycling World Cup in Manchester after victory in the women's omnium.

Becky James won her third medal after taking silver in the keirin.

Trott triumphed in the team pursuit on Friday, and won the final two of the six omnium events on Sunday to take gold ahead of Gillian Carleton by five points. Laurie Berthon was third, seven points off Trott.

In the scratch race, the penultimate event, Trott broke away from the peloton and lapped all of her rivals on her way to victory to set up a three-point lead going into the 500m time trial, where she edged Berthon by 0.3 seconds for the second World Cup omnium gold of her career.

"I didn't really have a choice," Trott said of her gamble in the scratch race. "I went into the race six points down and I was really on the back foot and my coach said to me I have got to at least try and win.

"Normally in the omnium, you are sitting back and just racing the people in the top six. I was really surprised no one went with me. I passed my coach and he said 'Go!'.

"The crowd was absolutely amazing. I don't think I would have won if it wasn't for them."

James - who won silver in the team sprint on Friday and bronze in the individual sprint on Saturday - won both her first and second-round keirin races but was beaten to gold by Germany's Kristina Vogel, victorious in both sprints.

She said: "Kristina had the legs on me in the final, but I am really happy with that [silver]. The early rounds went really well, so I can take a lot of positives from today.

"This event has gone really well. I am really happy with the whole weekend. Kristina is on fire, but hopefully I will be on top form by the worlds."

Wales' Jonathan Mould, representing team USN, won bronze in the men's scratch race while Britain's Owain Doull came tenth. The event was won by Austria's Andreas Muller.

Britain's Matt Crampton missed out on a podium place in the men's individual sprint, losing 2-0 in the bronze-medal final to Australia's Shane Perkins. Olympic champion Jason Kenny failed to qualify for the finals, with Germany's Robert Forstemann seeing off Trinidad's Njisane Phillip 2-0 to take gold.

Britain's Elinor Barker ended up tenth and Scotland's Katie Archibald 15th in the women's points race, with Canada's Laura Brown the winner.
