Gerrans holds off Evans to win Tour Down Under
Australia's Simon Gerrans beat compatriot Cadel Evans by just one second to claim victory in the Tour Down Under and a record third success in the event.
Gerrans entered the final stage of the Tour in Adelaide with a one second lead having grabbed the ochre jersey in the penultimate stage, and finished alongside Evans in a bunch finish after a closing sprint.
Briton Geraint Thomas finished eighth overall, having come third last year.
"This is an Australian team, on Australia Day, in a World Tour event. What else could I ask for?" said Gerrans.
"It's been a hard race for me and my team-mates," continued Gerrans.
"I was confident in my team-mates to take me home safely, which they did. Until I crossed the line, I suspected that Diego Ulissi [who finished third overall, five seconds behind] would try and do something, but it went all right."
