Sir Bradley Wiggins is facing a fight to regain his spot in the Team GB squad for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, according to British Cycling performance director Sir Dave Brailsford.

If selected, it would be Wiggins' fifth Olympic Games having amassed seven track and road medals to his name - four of them gold - throughout the last four Games.

However, Brailsford is adamant there will be no golden ticket for Wiggins to a place at the 2016 Games, despite his past achievements. He did, though, admit it would be a fitting end to the Brit's career in the saddle.

"Just because he is called Bradley Wiggins doesn't mean he would be selected," Brailsford said. "But I can't see why he couldn't [return for Rio]. It would be the end of his career. It would make a great last chapter."

Wiggins, who won the Tour de France in 2012, hinted last week that he would consider a return to track cycling at Rio and was not sure over his long-term future at Team Sky.

"That [the Olympics] was where it all started for me in Sydney [2000]," Wiggins said. "To finish there, and hopefully go out on a high, would be great."
