Chris Froome is closing in on a second consecutive triumph at the Tour of Oman after moving into the overall lead thanks to a win on the fifth stage.

The Tour de France champion finished 22 seconds ahead of Tejay van Garderen on the 5.7-kilometre ascent on the Green Mountain, and after picking up a bonus of 10 seconds for the win is now 26 seconds clear of Van Garderen in the general classification. The Briton is also 31 seconds clear of third-placed man Rigoberto Uran.

"It feels absolutely fantastic getting that win today, especially with it being the first race of my season. Coming into the race I wasn't sure exactly where my form was, but this has proved I'm where I need to be right now," Froome told teamsky.com.

"I could see Rigo chasing me for a while, and obviously Tejay again, but I was pleased with the amount of time I was able to put into them."
