Great Britain's women clinch team pursuit gold

Great Britain's women secured the gold medal in the team pursuit at the Track Cycling World Championships in Colombia.

Joanna Rowsell, Laura Trott, Katie Archibald and Elinor Barker helped Team GB win their first medal at the event in Cali with a victory over Canada by 1.3seconds, posting an overall time of four minutes and 23.407seconds.

Despite taking a sixth world title out of seven, Great Britain encountered problems as they trailed Canada early on, who had lost one of their four riders.

Great Britain would soon match Canada and see one of their riders Barker tumble as well and then struggle with their change of formation. However, Canada could not maintain their advantage, enabling the remaining British trio to secure gold.

"At the end Elinor [Barker] changed down the straight and I hadn't actually made it back onto the back yet," Trott told BBC Sport, who was the rider to fall behind when Great Britain changed their formation.

"I was shouting because I thought if she turned any quicker she'd take me out and then it'd be game over if I take her down. You get lucky sometimes I guess and that's what happened," added the new five-time world champion.

Jason Kenny was unable to defend his men's keirin title after finishing fifth, while Becky James finished seventh in the women's 500m time trial.
