Lampre-Merida's Diego Ullisi emerged as the fifth stage winner after a thrilling climax to the first hilltop finish of this year's Giro d'Italia.

The Italian timed his sprint to perfection after a thrilling final kilometre which saw the overall leaders vie for position with the sprinters for the stage victory as they made their way to Viggiano.

Ullisi initially looked as though he had left it late but rode hard enough to win the stage by a second. BMC's Cadel Evans, winner of the points classification in the 2010 Giro, finished second, with Trek Factory Racing's Julian Arredondo in third.

Orica-GreenEdge's Michael Matthews battled to stay with the leaders in the final kilometre and eventually finished sixth, meaning he held onto the overall race leader's pink jersey.

The riders face a gruelling test on Thursday as the sixth stage gets underway. It is the second longest of this year's Giro and also ends with an uphill finish at the famous Abbey of Montecassino, near Naples.
