Sir Bradley Wiggins is inching closer to victory in the Tour of California after extending his lead by four seconds at the end of stage four.

Team Sky rider Wiggins shared seventh place with a small group which included fellow Brit Mark Cavendish as they finished one minute 17 seconds behind stage winner Will Routley.

The 2012 Tour de France winner holds the overall lead and is 28 seconds ahead of his nearest rival, Garmin rider Rohan Dennis, with four stages remaining.

Tiago Machado sits third in the overall classification and is a further 41 seconds off Dennis, while Great Britain's Adam Yates is fifth for the Orica-GreenEdge team.

Routley finished the 165.1km (102.6 mile) stage from Monterey to Cambria in three hours 48 minutes and 37 seconds. Thursday's stage five is a 107.4 mile stretch from Pismo Beach to Santa Barbara.
