Wiggins holds onto California lead

Sir Bradley Wiggins retained his Tour of California lead for the fourth successive day and still holds a 28 second advantage with three stages remaining.

Wiggins finished alongside second place rival Rohan Dennis, 12 seconds adrift of stage five winner Taylor Phinney, who claimed the 172.9 kilometre (107.4 mile) stretch in three hours 59 minutes and 33 seconds.

Cannondale's Peter Sagan finished second with Matthew Gross taking third for the Orica team. The route took the field from Pismo Beach to Santa Barbara.

Wiggins, the 2012 Tour de France winner, keeps his overall lead while fellow Brit Adam Yates, of Team Orica, remains fifth in the overall standings ahead of stage six.

Friday's stage will see the field ride from Santa Clarita to Pasadena. The 151.8km (94.3 mile) route finishes with a climb to a mountain-top finish.
