Lampre rider Diego Ulissi secured his second stage win at this year's Giro d'Italia while Cadel Evans became the new leader after finishing fifth.

Evans opened up a 57-second gap on his rivals for the pink jersey during stage eight with previous leader Michael Matthews falling away.

"It has been a difficult Giro for all sorts of reasons," Evans said. "There were a lot of tired legs in the group today, but we are in a good position and now we head further into the mountains we will see a different kind of race.

"There's still a long way to go, but I got some seconds today [on my rivals] and I'm very pleased to have the lead.

"I've managed to get where I am thanks to my team-mates and I'm happy to be able to pay them back for such a great effort on their part."
