Nacer Bouhanni claimed his third stage victory at the Giro d'Italia after he outsprinted Giacomo Nizzolo in Salsomaggiore Terme on Tuesday.

FDJ.fr rider Bouhanni strengthened his hold on the points classification red jersey and crossed the line ahead of Nizzolo (Trek) and Michael Matthews (Orica-GreenEdge) after the 173-kilometre 10th stage from Modena.

Frenchman Bouhanni had already won stages four and seven of the race and timed his run superbly to avoid a crash in the final bend.

"I owe my team-mates the win because they put me in the ideal position," said Bouhanni, who was set up perfectly by fellow FDJ.fr rider Sebastien Chavanel.

Overall leader Cadel Evans maintained his 57-second lead over Omega Pharma-QuickStep rider Rigoberto Uran with a ninth-place finish, while Team Sky's Ben Swift came home in eighth place.

Stage 11, which takes place on Wednesday, will see the field take on a 249km medium mountains route from Collecchio to Savona.
