Colombia's Rigoberto Uran stormed to victory in the 12th stage individual time trial of the Giro d'Italia to take the race leader's pink jersey from Cadel Evans.

Omega Pharma - Quick-Step rider Uran was 87 seconds quicker than second-placed Diego Ulissi, completing the 41.9km course in 57 minutes 34 seconds.

Uran's time also edged Evans' by 94 seconds, after the Australian had headed into the stage holding a 57-second overall lead.

Evans finished third and dropped to second place overall, now 37 seconds adrift with nine stages of the race remaining.

"I am really surprised," said Uran, who is now the first Colombian to ever lead the Giro. "With it being a time trial, I didn't think I would win it, but it is a superb day."

Evans said: "I saw Uran coming into form, but I honestly did not expect him to have such an amazing time trial. Of course, I had hoped to have done better myself. The time trial course suited me well, but as I said yesterday, the verdict is on the road."
