Julian Arredondo clinched the first Grand Tour win of his career after triumphing on stage 18 of the Giro d'Italia, but Cadel Evans lost time on his rivals as he slipped from third to ninth in the standings.

With the 171-kilometre stage ending in the eighth of the Giro's nine summit finishes, Arredondo made his move from the 14-man breakaway with around four kilometres remaining to claim a solo victory, finishing 17 seconds ahead of fellow Colombian Fabio Duarte.

Stage 18 turned out to be a disastrous day for Evans as he fell out of the podium positions and is now four minutes and 59 seconds off the lead.

The 2011 Tour de France champion along with the main group of favourites was unable to respond to two attacks from Pierre Roland in the final four kilometres.

Roland replaces Evans in third spot in the general classification, with Nairo Quintana retaining the leader's pink jersey and his lead over Rigoberto Uran, which stands at one minute and 41 seconds.
