Chris Froome retained his overall lead of 12 seconds after a thrilling finish to the third stage of the Criterium du Dauphine in France.

Nikias Arndt edged the sprint finish in Le Teil, but defending champion Froome was guided safely over the finish line by his Team Sky team-mates.

Alberto Contdaor, Froome's main rival in the overall standings, finished alongside the Brit in the peloton.

Arndt pipped Kris Boeckmans by inches in a thrilling finish, with Reinardt Janse Van Rensburg holding on to claim third in the final yards.

The field will travel 167.5km from Montelimar to Gap in Wednesday's fourth stage.
