Defending champion Chris Froome had Team Sky team-mate Geraint Thomas to thank at the end of stage four of the Criterium du Dauphine.

Froome suffered a puncture with around 20 kilometres left of the 167.5km ride from Montelimar to Gap. He had to change bikes before Thomas led Froome safely back into the race.

As a result, Froome retained his 12 second overall lead in the race over main rival Alberto Contador, with four stages left to complete.

Wednesday's stage was won by Yury Trofimov, who crossed the line 23 seconds ahead of Swedish rider Gustav Larsson.
