Chris Froome and Team Sky struggled to an 11th place finish in the opening stage of the Tour of Spain as Movistar and Nairo Quintana claimed victory in the team time trial on Saturday.

Movistar were last off the ramp for the 12.6 kilometre route in Jerez de la Frontera but finished with a six-second advantage, completing the circuit in 14 minutes and 13 seconds overall.

Alberto Contador's Tinkoff-Saxo team set a time 19 seconds off the pace, while Team Sky's effort was 27 seconds shy of Movistar's lead.

Jonathan Castroviejo crossed the line first for Movistar to claim the red jersey ahead of Sunday's 174.4km second stage between Algeciras and San Fernando.

Briton Adam Yates helped Orica-GreenEdge claim the early lead before their time was beaten by Cannondale.

That time of 14 mins19s looked good when Movistar, along with former Vuelta winner Alejandro Valverde, held a five-point deficit at the half-way point of their run but they recovered to clinch a remarkable lead.
