John Degenkolb claimed his third sprint victory of the 2014 Tour of Spain during stage 12 as Alberto Contador retained his overall lead with Chris Froome remaining in fourth position.

Degenkolb avoided a crash in the peloton inside the final kilometre of Thursday's stage to sprint clear of Tom Boonen and Jacopo Guarnieri, who finished second and third respectively.

Due to the crash happening inside the final 3km of the 116.4km stage around Logrono, Contador and his rivals were awarded the same time as the front runners despite crossing the line over 40 seconds later.

As a result, Tinkoff-Saxo rider Contador remains 20 seconds ahead of second-place Alejandro Valverde in the overall standings. Colombia's Rigoberto Uran is one minute eight seconds off Contador's lead, while Briton Froome stays fourth.

Team Sky rider Froome is one minute 20 seconds off the overall lead.
