Cavendish's world hopes hit

Mark Cavendish's hopes of securing victory at the World Championships in October have been dealt a blow with the news Great Britain will have only three riders in the event.
A team can have up to a maximum of nine riders in the race, but the International Cycling Union allocate places on efforts during the season.
In 2009, following Bradley Wiggins' fourth-placed finish in the Tour de France and Cavendish's six stage wins and success in the Milan-San Remo, Britain were allocated nine spots. However, this season Wiggins had a sorry Tour and all Britain had to show was Cavendish's five stage wins.
As such, while Spain, Italy, Belgium, Australia and USA will take to the line with nine riders, Cavendish will have to make do with the support of only two team-mates in Melbourne.
