World cycling body UCI has urged the Spanish federation to begin disciplinary proceedings against Tour de France winner Alberto Contador.

The three-time winner tested positive for banned drug clenbuterol during the second rest day of this year's Tour.

However, Contador maintains his innocence, insisting that contaminated food caused him to fail the test.

The Spaniard, who has already been suspended by the UCI, could face a two-year ban from the sport.

"The UCI contacted the Spanish federation and asked them to open disciplinary proceeding against Contador," UCI spokesman Enrico Carpani said.

The Spanish federation have two days to inform Contador of the commencement of proceedings, which must be completed within a month.
