ICU lodges Contador appeal

The International Cycling Union has confirmed it will appeal against the Spanish federation's decision to clear Alberto Contador of doping.
Contador received a provisional one-year suspension from cycling after testing positive for the banned steroid clenbuterol in July. The three-time Tour de France winner, who has always maintained his innocence, claimed he had inadvertently consumed the banned substance after eating a piece of contaminated meat.
The Spanish federation opted to overturn its initial ruling, paving the way for Contador to return to competition, but he will face a fresh fight after the UCI confirmed it will take the case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
"The International Cycling Union (UCI) today decided - within the time frame stipulated by the Regulations - to appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Lausanne against the Spanish Cycling Federation's (RFEC) finding in the case of Alberto Contador," the UCI said in a statement.
"He was acquitted after testing positive for clenbuterol during an in-competition test carried out on 21st July 2010.The decision to appeal comes after an in-depth study of the file received from the RFEC."
