Australia's Simon Whitlock grabbed his first major title at the PartyPoker.net European Darts Championship in Muelheim, Germany.

Whitlock overcame England's Wes Newton 11-5 in the final to triumph at the tournament screened by ESPN.

In the semi-finals, Newton had slayed reigning champion Phil Taylor's conqueror Brendan Dolan.

In the final, the combatants shared the first four frames equally, with Newton sending out a message of intent by clinically converting a couple of double-top finishes.

Whitlock then started to build a gap, steaming into a 5-2 lead having won against the throw for the first time in the clash.

Newton hinted at a revival with an 11-darter to hit back to 6-4, only for Whitlock to respond by charging 9-4 ahead - and within two legs of the title - thanks to a 58 checkout in the 13th.

Whitlock betrayed no signs of nerves at the business end of the contest, taking out 94 to edge 10-5 ahead, before closing out the show with a decisive double eight.

Whitlock had beaten Kim Huybrechts 11-9 in his semi-final, while Newton overcame Dolan by the same scoreline.
