Ross Montgomery failed to clear the first hurdle at the BDO World Championship after he was dumped out by Paul Jennings on Monday.

Jennings played through the pain of a shoulder injury to oust the sixth seed with an inspired 3-1 victory.

Having lost the opening set, Montgomery hit back to level and looked to be on cruising through the third set, only to miss a dart to seal the set in straight legs.

Handed a lifeline, Jennings rallied with a brilliant 144 checkout to level at two legs apiece before taking a 2-1 lead with another three-figure checkout.

And Jennings, who lost to Wesley Harms in last year's quarter-finals on his World Championship debut, held his nerve to seal the victory and secure a last-16 clash with Ireland's Jason Cullen.

Meanwhile, Scott Waites underlined his status as the bookies' favourite as he powered into the second round with a 3-0 victory over Willy van de Wiel.

Third seed Waites, who has never progressed past the quarter-finals at Lakeside, looked in good form as he cruised to victory for the loss of just four legs.

Waites will face Belgian Geert de Vos in the last 16 after the Belgian won a deciding set in straight legs to defeat Tony Eccles 3-2.
