Red hot Van Gerwen sets up Barneveld clash

Defending World Grand Prix champion Michael van Gerwen produced a blistering performance in his first round tie with John Part, defeating the former world champion 2-0 at the Citywest Hotel in Dublin.

Van Gerwen raced through the first set which included two 12-dart legs and a 109 average, before Canadian Part hit back in the second. However, Van Gerwen clinched victory in style, hitting 180 and 171 to leave 94 in the deciding leg of the second set. The Dutchman went out on double four to finish his opening night with a 104.47 average and secure his spot in the last 16.

'Mighty' Mike will now face fellow Dutchman Raymond van Barneveld after the five-time world champion eased past debutant Stuart Kellett with a 2-0 win. Kellett missed two darts at tops for the first set, before Barneveld let loose in the second. Beginning with a 12-dart leg, 'Barney' finished 118 to move further ahead and then checked out 94 for victory.

Two-time world champion Adrian Lewis was made to work hard in his 2-1 victory over Brendan Dolan. Home favourite Dolan, who is dubbed 'The History Maker' after becoming the first player on television to hit a nine-dart finish with the double in-out format, came from a set down to level up and send the tie into a decider. However, it was 'Jackpot who prevailed in a sudden death shoot-out leg as he held his nerve to set up a tie with Justin Pipe.

Premier League star Andy Hamilton produced a master-class of finishing to see off Kim Huybrechts in straight sets, without missing a single double to win a leg. The Stoke ace took out finishes of 120, 118 and 96 to lead and further checkouts of 96 and 132 on the bullseye helped seal the win.

High rising Dave Chisnall and Ian White hit four 180's in their match, but it was Chizzy who was smiling after booking his spot in the second round with a 2-1 win.

Elsewhere, Kevin Painter cruised to a 2-0 victory over Richie Burnett, Justin Pipe saw off the challenge of Andy Smith and the in-form Wayne Jones sent 2012 runner-up Mervyn King packing with his 2-1 win. Jones now faces Chisnall in the second round.
