Chisnall eliminated, Taylor and Wade through

World no. 7 Dave Chisnall was the first of the big names to be eliminated from the Grand Slam of Darts after Sunday's second round group games, while Phil Taylor and James Wade booked their places in the second round.

On Saturday, Chisnall was defeated by Michael Smith in his opening fixture at the Wolverhampton Civic Hall. It got worse for the St Helens ace who, despite averaging just shy of 100, lost 5-3 to a rejuvenated Ted Hankey. 'The Count' scored a sensational 170 maximum finish to break his opponent's throw before sealing the win.

With BDO world champion Scott Waites enjoying a comfortable 5-2 win over Smith to earn his place in the last 16, World Grand Prix finalist Chisnall was left with plenty to contemplate ahead of the PDC World Championships in December.

Hankey will now face Smith in a deciding Group H fixture on Monday to determine who will join Waites in the next round.

Defending champion Raymond van Barneveld narrowly saw off Tony O'Shea in Group E, maintaining his 100% record with a 5-4 win. O'Shea missed darts to move 4-2 ahead and throw for the match, but levelled up to take the tie to a deciding leg. In thrilling fashion, Barneveld took out a wonderful 72 for the win.

Mervyn Kin bounced back from opening day defeat to O'Shea by sending Ricky Evans packing with a 5-2 win. King must beat Barneveld for a place in the next round, while O'Shea faces Evans to determine his fate.

Premier League star Robert Thornton earned his second win in Group F, with a 5-2 victory over Justin Pipe. Andy Hamilton kept his qualification hopes alive with a 5-1 win over Mark Walsh, who was knocked out as a result.

In Group G, Wes Newton secured an important 5-2 win over Ross Smith to keep his tournament hopes alive. Simon Whitlock looked in top form as he smashed Mark Webster 5-1, and will prove a stern test for Newton in the final group game on Monday.

Taylor and Wade are both through after enjoying convincing wins during the Sunday evening session.

World champion Taylor was relentless in his 5-1 Group A victory over Paul Nicholson, averaging 104.51 against 'The Asset' and quickly dismissing him on the oche.

Wade was equally as impressive in his Group B tie with Gary Anderson and finished clinically to record a 5-3 win over the Scot, who once again struggled with his doubles.

Elsewhere in Group A, Kevin Painter was eliminated by Stuart Kellett, who edged their match with a 5-4 win. The second fixture in Group B saw Peter Wright secure his first win of the competition; he beat Wesley Harms 5-2.

Michael van Gerwen destroyed Dean Winstanley 5-1 to all but secure a place in the last 16. The Dutchman tops Group D, with Kim Huybrechts joining Winstanley on two points after his 5-0 whitewash of Vincent van der Voort.

Two-time world champion Adrian Lewis suffered a shock 5-3 defeat to Ronny Huybrechts, who has now secured his last 16 spot. Lewis must beat Christian Kist to join Huybrechts in qualifying from Group C, after the Dutchman knocked Richie George out of the competition with a 5-2 win.
