Lewis edges past Van Gerwen
Adrian Lewis edged past Michael van Gerwen 10-8 to book his place in the quarter-finals of the Grand Slam of Darts.
Lewis started with a bang by hitting 180, but Van Gerwen hit double 19 for a 13-darter to take the opening leg. Van Gerwen broke for the first time for 5-3, then Lewis responded by breaking back immediately, and levelled by pinning double 18 for a 13-darter. The next two legs went Lewis' way, taking out 70 on tops for a 7-5 lead and a fourth successive leg.
They traded the next four legs as Lewis went 9-7 up. Lewis then hit a 12th 180 of the game but missed bull for the win as tops kept Van Gerwen in the match. However Lewis hit 78 in two darts for victory in the next leg.
Earlier, Phil Taylor saw off Gary Anderson 10-5 but was made to scrap in the early going. Taylor led four times but was pegged back on each occasion, until he finally broke throw for the first time in the match to go 6-4 up, after Anderson missed one dart at tops. Taylor then stretched away to 9-4, with Anderson taking out 128 to keep his hopes alive. They were short lived, however, with Taylor hitting double 12 at the second time of asking for a 144 finish.
Taylor will face James Wade after he swept Paul Nicholson aside 10-1 in the night's first match. Wade won three legs without reply before Nicholson broke throw with double 16 for a 12-darter. However the 2010 finalist did not lose another leg as he cruised to victory, sealing a comprehensive victory by hitting 125 with a bullseye-25-bullseye combination.
Kim Huybrechts will face Lewis in the last eight after coming out on top in the battle of the brothers, seeing off older sibling Ronny 10-5. Kim took a 3-0 lead after some brilliant finishing, hitting double 16 to take out 63. Ronny responded by opening the next leg with a 180 and finishing double 10 to register his first leg. However Kim eventually stretched his lead to 8-3 his brother came back with another 180 on his way to his fourth leg of the game. The pair traded legs again as Kim went up 9-5 to move within touching distance of the quarter-finals, landing double 10 to complete victory on his Grand Slam debut.
