Fifth seed Darryl Fitton was dumped out in the opening round of the BDO World Darts Championship after losing 3-1 to Tony Eccles in Monday's afternoon session.

Eccles took the first set 3-2 at Lakeside before Fitton levelled the match, winning the second set by the same scoreline.

However Eccles moved to the brink of victory with a 3-1 win in the third set, and sealed his place in the second round by winning three legs to two in the final set.

It was the seventh time in 12 years that Fitton has exited the competition in the first round.

Elsewhere, Paul Hogan defeated Karel Sedlacek 3-1, before the Netherlands' Jan Dekker secured a 3-0 clean sweep against compatriot Benito van de Pas.

Julie Gore kicked off the evening session with a 2-0 win over Rachna David. Dave Prins then saw off Jeroen Geerdink 3-0 before Geert De Vos beat Madars Razma 3-1.

Ross Montgomery then edged out Michael Meaney 3-2 in the final match of the day.
