Phil Taylor's woes continued as his UK Open defence came to an early end with a shock third-round defeat to world No.141 Aden Kirk.

Having lost his fourth Premier League match out of five on Thursday evening against Gary Anderson, world No.2 and 16-time world champion Taylor went down 9-7 to Kirk in Somerset.

"I still can't believe it and it's a dream come true for me," said Kirk, who was playing in his first televised match. "I'd had a couple of tough games already and I played well just to get through to play Phil, which was my aim coming here.

"But to beat him is amazing. Phil didn't play like he can do, but I took my chances and hit my doubles. My mum's a massive Phil Taylor fan and even she didn't think I'd beat Phil, but anything could happen now."

World champion Michael van Gerwen followed Taylor's exit up with a crushing 9-1 win over James Hubbard.

Lakeside Champion and PDC newcomer Stephen Bunting then sealed a dramatic 9-8 victory over Kevin Dowling.

Earlier in the night, World Championship finalist Peter Wright moved into the last 32 after edging Michael Smith 9-8 while Adrian Lewis saw off Ronnie Baxter 9-5, hitting four 180s with an average of 87.98.

Dave Chisnall also progressed, overcoming Justin Pipe 9-7 with Kevin Painter beating Richie Burnett 9-5.
