Taylor turns on the power against Newton
Phil Taylor continued his recovery in the Premier League by thumping Wes Newton 7-1.
'The Power' made it back-to-back wins for the first time in this year's competition by following up his close victory over Dave Chisnall last week.
With a Premier League record crowd of almost 11,000 in Leeds, Taylor went 2-0 in front, but Newton collected the third leg to halve the deficit.
However, Taylor raised his game, and almost landed a nine-darter to go 4-1 up as he could not land the seventh dart.
Taylor, who has already lost four games so far, sealed an emphatic victory to keep his play-off hopes alive.
Reigning world and Premier League champion Michael van Gerwen edged out Gary Anderson 7-5 in a close battle.
After the first four legs were shared, Van Gerwen checked out 122 to break the former Premier League champion. However, Anderson hit straight back to finish 76 and the leg in 11 darts.
Anderson twice led at 4-3 and 5-4, but after squaring the contest on the bull from a 121, Van Gerwen hit 70 in the following leg to break and then landed double 18 to take the match-winning leg in 11 darts for a 7-5 victory.
Newly-crowned UK Open champion Adrian Lewis salvaged a point against Robert Thornton, fighting back from 4-0 and 6-4 down to not leave empty-handed after Thornton missed two darts for the match.
In the opening match of the night, Dave Chisnall and Simon Whitlock shared the points in a 6-6 draw. Chisnall made a lightning start by racing into a 3-0 lead, but Whitlock - who is bottom of the Premier League - closed the gap to 3-2.
Chisnall opened up a three-leg advantage at 5-2, and guaranteed himself a point at 6-4, but failed to take the second point of offer for the win by not finishing 79, and then busting his score on 80 in the final leg, which enabled Whitlock to convert double tops for a point.
Five-time champion of the world Raymond van Barneveld and Peter Wright also drew 6-6, with Wright checking out 161 on the bull to snatch a point in the final match of the night.
