Lewis storms into second round with whitewash

Adrian Lewis posted an ominous warning to his World Matchplay rivals as he wiped the floor with Andrew Gilding for a 10-0 whitewash win in Blackpool.

The 2013 finalist averaged 110.5 as he rattled through his opening match in ruthless style at the Winter Gardens. Debutant Gilding averaged 92.55 himself but simply had no answer to Lewis' mastery.

Lewis took out 87 in the third leg before a 100 checkout in the fourth and maximums in the next two.

He then finished 97 to continue his charge before finishing double 18 for 8-0. A 10-dart leg followed by a 14-darter wrapped up the proceedings and saw Lewis march into the second round.

Stephen Bunting kicked off the evening with a brilliant debut 10-6 victory against Peter Wright.

The Lakeside champion broke throw immediately and doubled his lead by finishing 70 on the bull before Wright got off the mark by finishing double 16.

Bunting moved four legs clear with double 10 for 7-3 though Wright hit back immediately. A second successive leg ended on double one with Bunting this time taking it.

Wright replied on double four but Bunting hit a second 180 and posted tops for a 13-darter to move to the brink of victory at 9-5. He missed a dart at tops for the win as Wright took out 84 on the bull to stay alive, but Bunting wasn't to be denied as he secured the victory by finishing 72 on double six.

In the final match of the night, Gary Anderson sealed a superb 10-8 win against Jamie Caven.

The first seven legs went on throw before Caven broke by taking out 132 on the bull. However, Anderson hit a maximum before a 145 checkout saw him break back immediately to trail 5-4.

The match stayed on throw before Anderson got the key break for 8-7, hitting double 12 to punish three misses at tops from Caven. Anderson then saw out the match with two holds.

Elsewhere, Mervyn King averaged 101 and finished 50 percent of his chances at a double as he overpowered Kim Huybrechts 10-4.
