Eddie Jones has told new England captain Dylan Hartley to be like Tarzan during the Six Nations.

Northampton Saints hooker Hartley was a controversial appointment to skipper England by Jones, who replaced Stuart Lancaster after a dismal World Cup campaign, due to a disciplinary record that has seen him serve more than a year's worth of suspensions.

But Jones said he chose Hartley due to his natural leader skills and ability to "get the best out of people".

The former Australia and Japan coach added: "On the field he's got to be Tarzan. He's got to get out there and play with his heart and if he does that the players will follow him.

"The first time I met him we came to the kitchen and he was speaking to people behind the counter, he was very polite and respectful.

"He gets around, talks to people, encourages people to be involved.

"Leadership is not about being in the front of the bus, beating your chest and saying 'do as I do'. It's about engaging people and finding out what qualities they have. I've been pleased how Dylan's done that."

With Hartley only just returning from injury, he is unlikely to play the full 80 minutes when England open the Six Nations campaign against Scotland on Saturday -- and Jones revealed he will name Hartley's deputy on Thursday when he announces his starting line-up for the Murrayfield clash.
