2.30pm (1230GMT) Welcome finally to the eagerly-awaited first test match between South Africa and the British & Irish Lions in a sunny Durban on the east coast of South Africa. The teams are as announced earlier in the week - so will the Boks be underdone as Warren Gatland's speculated or will the Lions' breakdown woes continue? I'm Jean Smyth, kickoff is in Durban is 1300 GMT and I'll be with you from the opening to the final whistle.

We're underway - taken in by O'Driscoll and he clears long deep into Bok territory. First lineout by Du Plessis and Matfield takes. Du Preez clears and Pietersen is off-side. Penalty to the Lions. Jones to go for posts from up against the touchline.

Jones just pulls it left and Frans Steyn balsts the ball upfield to near the Lions 22.

Mears throws and the Boks win it. Ball goes left by the Boks, then right and Pienaar chips through. Drama as Pietersen and Monye tussle and it's a 5m scrum to the Boks.

TRY! Boks go left with Pienaar, it's quickly recycled and the captain John SMit crashes over just left of the posts. What a start for the home side.

Pienaar makes no mistake with the conversion and it's 7-0. From the restart Steyn drops the ball and the Lions have a scrum in the 22. The first one goes down. Reset.

Scrum, second time around which also needs to be reset. The Lions go left from the scrum and it flies through the hands to Monye out wide who's scragged as he appears to go over. it's going upstairs? Tight one this!

NO TRY! That's the decision from the TMO. ALthough it's a communication breakdown as the TMO Christophe Berdos and Bryce Lawrence disagree and eventually it's a 22 drop-out to the Boks.

So back to the game then! Steyn hoists one and it comes off Pierre Spies' head but Lawrence gives a knock-on against him. Scrum Lions and WOW the Boks go straight through the Lions. That wasn't supposed to happen was it? Penalty to the Boks. Pienaar to shoot for poles.

Pienaar nails it and the Boks take a 10-0 lead.

Off the restart the Boks have a scrum in their 22 and Pienaar clears long. In the Lions half.

Lions ball in centre-field. It's messy and eventually Lawrence blows for a Lions scrum on the half-way line. The Lions are struggling come scrum-time.

Lions go left and Byrne beats one before being tackled. They recycle and come left but it's rather lateral before coming left and Mears puts Wallace through a great hole but he's pulled down short of the line and the Boks break out but Jenkins fantastically takes Habana down and he's oinged for holding on. Jones for poles.

Jones....misses. It's slipped left and that should have been over. Chance missed.

Mears with another poor lineout and it's lost and Ruan Pienaar smashes it upfield. The Lions have started poorly here.

Lions clear deep and Frans Steyn strokes it back toward Byrne who takes it up. The Lions go left but are tackled back and Jones kicks upfield. Aerial ping-pong ensues before the Boks are blown up for John Smit taking the ball in an off-side position.

Big scrum on the left from the Boks and Brussow wins it. Beast Mtawarira is grilling Phil Vickery here. Ball goes up the left and eventually into touch.

It's far out from the far side and Steyn nails! What a kick that is. 13-0 to the home side. They're taking the points whenever they get downfield. Horrible start for the Lions.

Again Pienaar clears from the restart. The Lions get the ball on the Bok 22 after a bout of more kicking.

TRY! The Boks lose a lineout and O'Connell gathers. Lions now on the attack and Roberts bursts through the mid-field and as he is held up he excellently off-loads to O'Driscoll to is then tackled by Pietersen but he manages to offload to Croft who crashes over. Great try.

Jones gets the conversion too. The Lions are back in the game now.

Monye takes a mark inand kicks upfield and Pienaar knocks on from the catch. Scrum to the Lions on the Springbok 22. Good period for the Lions this.

The scrum goes down again. Big battle here between The Beast and Vickery.

Lions now and they look good but there's crossing in the centre as the Lions look to score. Penalty to the Boks and they miss touch.

O'Connell is neither the tackler or in from the right side but has his hands on the ball. Not allowed I'm afraid and Steyn has another shot at goal from the half-way line.

Steyn pulls this one horribly left and the Boks get the ball off the restart and Jean de Villiers knocks on. Scrum to the Lions.

The scrums have been messy. And Heaslip picks up at the back and Phillips boots it up and the Boks break down the left and it's kicked by de Villiers before it's gathered and kicked back.

Beast now takes off the restart and charges forward. Pienaar clears long downfield and Byrne returns it but straight to Pietersen. Who charges forward.

Great run by de Villiers who offloads to Botha and the Boks clear. The Lions go through a few phases and then send another poor kick to Steyn who blasts it back upfield.

O'Driscoll drops it and the Boks attack down the right. Pietersen chips forward and he goes to ground and tries to palm it bacl before he goes into touch. Ref blows for a knockon but misses what should have been an adavantage to the Lions. Ref apologies. Kearney on for Byrne.

Unlucky for the Lions. They missed the advantage and from the scrum they've conceded a penalty on their own ball! No bind according to Lawrence and Pienaar has another shot at posts.

The siren goes and the Boks boot into touch. Well - the tour is firmly underway now and the home side have easily coped with the Lions in this half. Worries for the Lions and their coaching staff in particular in the scrum? That was never going to be an issue was it? Well the Boks have certainly showed up in that respect.

Half-time There'll be a lot happening in that Lions change-room. Improvement needed in the scrum, line-out and at the ruck needed if the Lions want to get back into this. For the Boks they will be disappointed at conceding the try and for nearly letting Monye in. There's a feeling that the Boks could still go up a gear if needs. They've kicked plenty of ball and pressed very well. We're just about to get the second-half underway, where Stephen Jones will kick-off.

Back underway and the Lions regain the kickoff. The Lions take the ball up the right. Into centre-field now and then the Lions are penalised for Vickery diving off his feet and from the side. To touch.

Off the line-out the Boks are pinged for interference and Jones boots it downfield. Mears again misses his jumpers and the boots clear upfield. Kearney returns that with interest though.

Bok line-out taken by Spies. Boks maul it up and have advantage. They're mauling this upfield now. From their 22 the ball is ends up on the Lions 10 metre lions. What a maul that is! Eventually a penalty as Paul O'Connell is in at the side.

Januarie gets it back and boots it off the park. The Springboks win a thriller in the end and the last 20 minutes was all Lions. Excellent game and the Lions will take a lot of heart from that display.
