Ieuan Evans is a former international wing who played 72 times for Wales and seven times for the British & Irish Lions. He is regarded as one the greatest wings in Welsh history having scored 33 tries for his country over 11 years of international rugby.
He first started playing rugby for Llanelli, aged 19, and moved to Bath in the final season of his career where he won the Heineken Cup. By the time he retired in 1999 Evans had the distinction of winning every piece of club silverware. His international career started in 1987 when he played on the right-wing as Wales were beaten by France 16-9 at the Parc des Princes in the Five Nations in Paris.
In an illustrious career Evans captained the Welsh to win the Five Nations Championship in 1994 and in 1993 he scored his most memorable try for Wales when he outpaced England's Rory Underwood to score against England in the Five Nations, winning 10-9 in Cardiff. Evans captained Wales at the 1995 World Cup in South Africa but the campaign was a failure as the Welsh were knocked-out by Ireland when they lost the crucial final match of the pool stages 24-23.
Arguably Evans' career highlight was scoring the Lions' series winning try against Australia in 1989 in Sydney as they won an epic encounter 19-18. He is part of a rare club having represented the Lions on three tours in 1989, 1993 and 1997. However, in 1993 his tour was brought to a premature end after he suffered a groin injury.
He finished his international career with a 23-20 win over Italy in Llanelli in February 1998 and has since started his own PR marketing company. In 1996 he was awarded an MBE for services to rugby and currently does commentary work for television. In 2007 he was inducted into the International Rugby Hall of Fame.
