A fringe international for much of his career, Seear won a total of 12 caps between 1977 and 1979.

He began his career at lock but was later converted into a No.8 where he won all of his international caps. He was a reserve in the Test series against the British & Irish Lions in 1977 and finally made his debut against France later the same year. He retained his place for the second Test and displayed his powerful boot by landing a penalty from inside his own half.

Seear was selected again for the Tests against the Wallabies in 1978 and then played in all four of the internationals on the Grand Slam tour of Britain later that year.

He was again at No 8 in the two tests in 1979 against the touring French and in the one-off Bledisloe Cup international in Sydney. But both the second Test against France and the Test against the Wallabies were lost and Seear was one of those to pay the price.
