New Zealand kicked off their Grand Slam tour with a comprehensive 41-3 victory over an injury-ravaged Wales side at the Millennium Stadium. Wales, defending Grand Slam champions, were shorn of leading lights Martyn Williams, Dwayne Peel, Tom Shanklin and Gavin Henson, and paid the price in front of an expectant crowd. Dan Carter, fresh from tearing apart the touring British & Irish Lions, finished with a 26-point haul including two tries and winger Rico Gear bagged a hat-trick. "It probably galvanised us to do a good job against Wales<" All Blacks manager Darren Shand said afterwards - six days earlier six of the squad had been in trouble after a late-night drinking incident. "This group is not about punishing people after catching them out, it's about growing people."

Will Carling celebrated his first game as England captain with a lively 28-19 win against Australia at Twickenham. Carling, only 22, was helped along by his prolific winger Rory Underwood who scored twice. Dewi Morris and Simon Halliday also crossed for the home side while David Campese was on the score-sheet for the Wallabies.

"I came to the view that it was time for me to move on. The loss to France was a devastating day, currently the most devastating of my rugby union career."

The gulf in early post-war rugby-playing ability between the English and Irish Universities was demonstrated at Iffley Road where a cosmopolitan Oxford side beat Trinity College, Dublin, 53-0.

1949
Although the Probables beat the Possibles 17-3 in the first Welsh trial at Pontypool, only two of their side took to the field against England a couple of months later when Wales launch a Grand Slam season.
