1983
Maurice Colclough's try set England on course for a 15-9 Twickenham win against the All Blacks. Colclough's try, a barge over from a lineout in the second-half, capped off a dominant forward display from England, who repaired a small part of the damage inflicted by the British & Irish Lions' 4-0 thumping by the All Blacks earlier in the year. It was a superb start for new coach Dick Greenwood and new captain Peter Wheeler but it was a false dawn; England lost five of their next six matches, including three in the Five Nations.

2011
Ronan O'Gara was the hero for the second time in successive weeks as he nailed a last-minute drop goal to give Munster a 27-24 victory over Castres in the Heineken Cup. The feat followed a similar match-winning intervention the previous week against Northampton Saints, who had reached the final of the competition that summer.

1993
Scotland's re-opening of Murrayfield turned sour when South Africa thumped them 34-10 but Springbok coach Kitch Christie was left fuming that they did not punish them more. "Against a great team we would pay for taking all of our tries," he said. "It will take a revolution to find a team to fill Murrayfield in five years' time," chipped in the Daily Mirror.

1988
Australia put a loss to England a fortnight earlier behind them with a 32-13 thumping of Scotland at Murrayfield. The Daily Express lamented the home side's performance noting the "only trophy they are likely to be contesting this season is the wooden spoon".

1977
Former England fly-half Ian Wright walked out on Northampton after eight years after being asked to play fullback for the club's 2nd XV. Team secretary Bob Allen hardly helped matters by telling the newspapers: "We seem to have slipped up in communications here. But we thought that Ian would prefer to play for the second team out of position rather than turn out for the third team."

1921
Yorkshire won the County Championship "War of the Roses" Northern Group match by the artistic margin of a try to nil before 5,000 spectators at Waterloo.

1927
Billy Sheehan broke away to score a late try, which he also converted, to give the touring New South Wales Waratahs a 14-9 victory after an even game against Northumberland/Durham combined at Newcastle.

1999
Leinster began their European Cup season with an uplifting 27-20 home win in a pool match against the much-fancied Leicester Tigers.
