England Under-20 prop Shaun Knight will continue his rugby education with a spell in New Zealand at Counties Manukau during this season's ITM Cup.

The Gloucester tight-head has been loaned to the province until October, having represented England this summer as they reached the semi-finals at the Junior World Championships in Argentina.

Counties' profile has been raised in recent months by the announcement of former All Blacks skipper Tana Umaga as player-coach and Gloucester's academy manager Mark Cornwell is expecting Knight to make the most of his time there.

"Shaun's a great prospect and has made great strides over the past year or so. But there's no better place to learn your rugby than on one of the hotbeds of New Zealand rugby," he said.

"Counties have produced some great players over the years, Jonah Lomu for example, and it's a great opportunity for Shaun to develop as a player."

Meanwhile, Taranaki will be without flanker Scott Waldrom for their opening round game against Northland on July 29 after he underwent surgery to reattach a tendon to his thumb. Waldrom suffered the injury playing for the New Zealand Barbarians against the New Zealand Maori three weeks ago and could also be sidelined for the second-round showdown with Tasman.
