Reigning Premiership champions Leicester Tigers have been boosted prior to the new campaign with the news that Richard Cockerill has signed a new contract at Welford Road.

The former England hooker, 39, took the reins as head coach in February 2009 following the resignation of Heyneke Meyer and has since guided his former club to back-to-back domestic titles and the final of the Heineken Cup.

He has been promoted to the role of director of rugby while backs coach Matt O'Connor, a one-time Wallaby, steps up to fill the void as head coach.

Peter Wheeler has confirmed that he will serve as executive director alongside the coaching staff. He will also continue to represent the Tigers on the Premier Rugby board and also the Premiership clubs on the RFU's Professional Game Board and Council.

"Leicester Tigers is a unique club where so many people work very hard to get the team into positions to compete for major honours," Cockerill said. "This is one of those special jobs in the world of sport and I feel privileged to be in this position.

"Matt and the other coaches and the support staff have been fantastic in my time here and the players deserve great credit for putting in the work in training and then into action on matchdays when it really counts."
