Sale Sharks will begin their Aviva Premiership campaign without fly-half Charlie Hodgson after he underwent surgery to correct a shoulder problem.

Hodgson is expected to miss the first month of the season to complete his rehabilitation, with the Sharks saying that the procedure was "a complete success".

He had been troubled by the injury for some time and went under the knife after consulting specialists.

Hodgson performed well in England's midweek side on tour to Australia and New Zealand in June and his absence will pose questions of head coach Mike Brewer's squad. Former Cardiff Blues utility back Nick Macleod provides cover but his Sharks career has largely been spent at fullback.

Sale's opening Premiership game is against Newcastle at Edgeley Park on September 3.
