Vesty leading the way

The first round of the Aviva Premiership season is in the can, leaving you to pore over your opening haul of points in ESPNscrum's Premiership Fantasy game.

London Irish top the pile after defeating a much-fancied Saracens outfit at Twickenham, and they are joined on the winners' podium by Bath, Northampton, Sale and new boys Exeter. Gazing longingly from below are Wasps and Harlequins, who played out a 29-29 draw in the second game of Saturday's London Double Header.

Northampton's win over Leicester on Saturday was a major boost for the Saints first-up and also contributed a couple of the weekend's star performers from a fantasy perspective. Northampton loose-head Soane Tonga'uiha bagged a brace of tries in a personal haul of 12 points, a feat matched by Leicester wing Scott Hamilton. We'll all agree that props scoring doubles is more fun than wingers, though.

There was no kicking performance of note at Franklin's Gardens as both Stephen Myler and Toby Flood struggled, but there was no such difficulty at Headingley for new Bath recruit Sam Vesty. The former Leicester fly-half bagged 16 fantasy points thanks to his try, five kicks and assist. Harlequins' Nick Evans, Exeter's Gareth Steenson and Wasps fullback Mark van Gisbergen also enjoyed productive afternoons with the boot.

Steenson proved to be the difference at Sandy Park as Exeter picked up a 22-10 victory over Gloucester, with his opposite number Nick Robinson missing a clutch of chances. Gloucester wing James Simpson-Daniel nevertheless brought home the fantasy bacon, his try and assist securing 11 points.

The back-row scoring was led by Newcastle's Brent Wilson, who scored two tries in his side's opening day defeat to Sale at Edgeley Park. His 13 points narrowly eclipsed the efforts of Saracens' Ernst Joubert, who chimed in with a try and assist, Harlequins' Nick Easter and Bath skipper Luke Watson, who also notched a try from No.8.

Remember that you can make up to 40 changes throughout the season - which might be an idea if you've put all your eggs in the injured Toby Flood's basket - and can still register your team and join in all of the action.
