Lewis Moody has tried to play down fears as he awaits news on the knee injury he suffered during England's 23-19 World Cup warm-up victory over Wales.

The England captain will have a scan on his right knee injury on Monday after being helped off the field by two medics in the 61st minute at Twickenham on Saturday. Moody, who was making his international return after missing the Six Nations with ligament damage to the same knee, went into the game with his knee heavily strapped. And his early withdrawal prompted fears that he could miss out on the Rugby World Cup.

England manager Martin Johnson will finalise his 30-man World Cup squad on August 22, with the first match against Argentina in Dunedin on September 10. But Moody insisted: "It was just a tweak to the knee. I am walking fine. It is nicely strapped up. We will see how it is in a couple of days.

"I will have a scan on Monday morning because that is standard procedure when you leave the field, but the medics have told me not to read anything into that," he told the Mail on Sunday.

"When Tom Palmer fell on me, I did think, "Oh no, my World Cup might be over". But by the time I got back to the dressing room I was moving normally and I realised it was not as bad as I thought. You don't get a definitive prognosis at this stage, except when it is very serious.'

Johnson was similarly up beat over the injury. He described it as a 'strain' and will wait before giving any prognosis of Moody's recovery time.

"He's got a bit of a strain but hopefully he's OK, we don't know with these things until probably 24 hours (afterwards)," Johnson told Sky Sports HD. "Unfortunately injuries happen, we saw (Morgan) Stoddart got a serious one for them which again is unfortunate, but the guys have got to go out and play, you can't go half-measure."
