Martyn Thomas will not take a bonus from the Rugby Football Union when he leaves his role as interim chief executive next month.

The RFU are set to make performance-related payments for senior executives worth up to £250,000 following the announcement of a record £8.7 million profit for the last financial year. Elite rugby director Rob Andrew is among those potentially eligible for the payment in the context of a chaotic World Cup campaign and severe criticism of the RFU.

However, Thomas, who came in for strong criticism for his role in the dismissal of former chief executive John Steele, will not receive any payment.

"The policy of the RFU and I imagine most employers is not to comment on employees' personal remuneration packages," Thomas told the Guardian. "However, as far as I personally am concerned, I was appointed on a fixed six-month contract which expires shortly and which gives me no entitlement to participate in the RFU directors bonus scheme. Quite rightly I will not participate in any such scheme payment."

The RFU has so far refused to discuss who will be entitled to the bonuses and how much they may receive.
