Harlequins scrum-half Danny Care has been fined an undisclosed amount by the Premiership club following his arrest in the early hours of Saturday morning.

The England No.9 was detained by Surrey police on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly following Harlequins' Heineken Cup defeat to Toulouse and was later released without charge having paid a fixed-penalty fine.

The 24-year-old was later reprimanded by Stuart Lancaster, head of England's interim coaching team, in a phone conversation with the Rugby Football Union opting not to issue any further punishment. However, Quins have since handed the player a fine in an attempt to draw a line under the issue ahead of their return clash with Toulouse this weekend.

"Harlequins have acted swiftly and decisively after an incident involving scrum-half Danny Care in the early hours of last Saturday morning," the club said on its official website. "There had been no complaint made to the club regarding the incident, but the club has a strict code of conduct in place and, in accordance with that, the player was fined.

"This was deemed an internal matter by the club and, in that regard, it was decided that the club would not reveal the size of the fine, but would like to confirm that it will be in the form of a donation by the player to The Teenage Cancer Unit in UCLH on Tottenham Court Road, which some of the players have visited recently, and Danny will donate to them before Christmas."

Quins' director of rugby Conor O'Shea, whose side are looking to bounce back from their first defeat of the season, commented: "We have a crucial Heineken Cup match at the weekend in Toulouse, so it was important we acted quickly. We take it very seriously; however, from the club's point of view, a line will be drawn under the incident and we will get on with our preparation for the match. Danny has apologised to his team and understands fully what is expected of him."

Care reiterated his regret, adding: "It was a silly thing to do - I accept that and apologise completely. We had just played a tough game, and I was out with some of the team and friends, but should have remembered that, as a professional player, I am on duty throughout the season and need to set a better example to the fans. I totally accept the police and club fines."
